The James Bond Lexicon
The JIM diving suit is an atmospheric diving suit (ADS), which is designed to maintain an interior pressure of one atmosphere despite exterior pressures, eliminating the danger of the ‘bends’; the occupant does not need to decompress when returning to the surface.
Invented in 1969 by a British underwater equipment company, and named after it’s chief diver. mainly used in the petroleum industry.
In the movie For Your Eyes Only the double agent Kristatos appears to own at least two examples as part of his shipping and oil exploration interests. Bond and Columbo spot one in storage at Kristatos’s warehouse in Albania, but this is presumably destroyed when the warehouse is blown up. Later a diver in a JIM suit attacks Bond and Melina Havelock when they are working to recover the ATAC system from the sunken wreck of the St. Georges. Bond destroys the suit by attaching the magnetic thermite bomb from the ATAC housing to the back of the suit’s headpiece.
